Introduction to how neurotransmitters work about.com

Biological Psychiatry
Making the Three Tenors Sing (washingtonpost.com) May,2000 serotonin regulates worry and anger,  dopamine is critical for initiative and pleasure and that norepinephrine controls alertness and energy.

Addressing Both the Emotional and Physical Symptoms in Depression Medscape CME April 2003 In 1998, Stephen Stahl[16] theorized that all 3 neurotransmitters -- dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin -- affected mood, and that both norepinephrine and serotonin affected anxiety. But he believed that dopamine may preferentially regulate motivation, pleasure, and reward; serotonin may preferentially regulate obsessions and compulsions; and norepinephrine may preferentially regulate alertness and energy. Showing the symptom domains of serotonin and norepinephrine, Stahl placed mood, emotion, anxiety, pain, irritability, and cognitive function in the domain of both neurotransmitters. Vigilance and motivation are in the domain of norepinephrine; and the serotonin domain includes impulsivity, sex, appetite, and aggression
