Omega-3 Fatty Acids Evaluated for Bipolar Disorder

Archaeological dietary studies show that when we evolved as human beings,we had diets that were much higher in DHA-rich omega-3," says Dr Joseph Hibbeln of the NIMH. "We ate more fish and game meat, and we used to eat organ meats and brains. In 100 years, we've eliminated a lot of these sources of omega-3 from our diets, and studies of the prevalence of depression show that it has increased about 100-fold over the same time period.

Most omega-3 supplements are derived from several species of cold-water fish. Other sources include flax seed, pumpkin seed, and walnuts. The oils we eat today tend to be rich in trans-fatty acids which block omega-3 absorption.

OMEGA-3

Recently Dr Andrew Stoll of omega-3 oil fame addressed the Boston MDMA. His advice for those taking it:

* Fish oil is the recommended source of omega-3. Flaxseed oil and perilla oil contain a different type of omega-3. Several cases of hypomania have occurred in people taking flaxseed oil.
* Omega-3 is usually a supplement to drug treatment. There is not yet enough experience to recommend using it alone in most cases. There are no known interactions with psychotropic drugs.
* A starting dose of 5 grams of omega-3 per day is currently recommended. Focus on the omega-3 concentration in each capsule.
* Taking the supplements with orange juice can reduce the fishy taste.
* Do not pursue this treatment if you are taking any type of blood thinners, even high doses of aspirin, or any medications or substances that have the same blood thinning effect.
* Do not use cod liver or other fish liver oils to achieve high omega-3 doses, since it could result in vitamin A toxicity.
